The session

Conversation first. That’s the whole method.

  • 1

    Real talk, from minute one

You sign about real life — your day, your family, your work, your stories. Alena keeps the conversation flowing the way Deaf people actually sign: facial expression, rhythm, and all.

  • 2

Receptive practice — the part classes skip

Most learners can pass a vocab test, then freeze when someone signs back. Here you practice understanding a real signer at natural speed, with patient re-dos when you get stuck.

  • 3

    Gentle correction, zero judgment

Alena shows you the clearer sign, the more natural phrasing, the Deaf-culture context behind it — in the moment, without stopping the conversation cold.

Questions

Before you book

Do I need to be advanced?

No. If you know basic signs and fingerspelling, you have enough to start. Sessions meet you at your level — the point is real practice, not perfection. If you freeze or blank on a sign, Alena helps you through it; that’s literally what a Buddy is for.

How do I pay?

Right inside Calendly when you book. You can pay the $35 by card through Stripe. Once payment goes through, your session is confirmed — there’s no separate payment step afterward.

How do I get my Zoom link?

Alena sends it before your session starts, so it’s right at the top of your inbox.

I’m not in Central Time. How do the hours work for me?

Alena’s hours are Monday–Thursday 10am–7pm and Friday 10am–4pm Central, but Calendly automatically shows you the equivalent times in your own time zone when you book. Book the time that reads right on your screen and you’re set.

What if I have a question before booking?

Email Alena at deafaslbuddy@gmail.com — she’ll get back to you. You can also message her on Instagram at @alenammagnolia — send the word BUDDY.

Your next real ASL conversation is 40 minutes away.
